Hello Friends of This Forum

It has been swimming in my brain that it would be
a good idea to open this thread!!

Its about a wide subject of Management. It could be useful
for one and all.

If one walked into a bookshop it can be bewildering and overwhelming!!
The rows and rows of Management books defies the Imagination. Ones
immediate choice is often dictated by what one wants to find on
a particular subject.

It is often tempting to go browsing and it can
take a whole day. Still then it can be unfocussed and you might come
to purchase nothing if nothing strikes ones imagination.

There are instances when you might come across something lucid and
definitive. It might appear in a small book. Sometimes these distill the essence
of a particular subject. For example, the subject of 'Business Plans' is treated
in many chapters in a book used by those attempting a Masters of Business
Administration. It can be intimidating for many . A concise rendition of the subject
can often be found in a well written 'smaller book'.!!! Subject matter is cleverly
distilled and made plain. It is this 'gem' of a book that could fit into the purpose
of this thread. Articles are many in this modern information Age. Some are very
valuable.

A point to note is to not abridge copyright and acknowledgement is essentail.
One cannot print the whole small book. This is illegal. One can express the ideas
expressed in the book with sufficient acknowlegments.

I am tempted to write somethings on Management from my own head!! I will, without
being presumtous and condescending. We learn everday and an old man of eighty has
also need to learn how to adapt to old age!!

I have on my own experience been subject to 2 consultancies at the Top End
of those currently enjoying that status. I had to be exposed to Management
in order to gain profiency in business. Two solid years on assignment in many
top companies in the world - mainly oil companies.

The approach i would like to outline is basically as follows: In the old methodology
of schools and universities is the classic class room situation where we sat and
listened to the teachers and professors and coped to listening and learning

Many of us got into mischief by throwing paper aeroplanes and putting
wild frogs in the pockets of our suffering school mates. It was like rote
learning, to be brief on the point. It bred BOREDOM!!

Nowadays the education delivery method has changed drastically. Teachers
now are called 'learning facilitators'. They facilatate the learning process and are
discouraged from acting in an autocratic manner. The learning is achieved
by projects accomplished by teams of students. Learning is gained by sharing and
driven by self and team discovery and the retention of facts and experimenting
is believed to be more effective. More fun!! The learning facilitators are discouraged
from beating your head and pulling your ears!!

AND so the style and methodology that could be adopted in this thread would
be to all intents and purposes be in that mode: learning and sharing together.

This is only my introductory statement and hope all are happy with it!!!

later we can post whatever you find worthwhile , even quotes and humorous
business jokes to lessen the burden of learning...

May all peace be upon you...

A Song of Childhood when the Mind Awakes
A long road to fathom . We start in childhood where the first
images awake. It lives with us through out of lives. A poem
to celebrate the beginning..

A CHILDS IMAGINATION.

O Thou golden image
Miniature of bliss
Speaking sweetly, speaking mettle
Every word deserves a kiss

Strange ,remote and splendid
Childhoods fancy pure
Thrills to thought we cannot fathom
Quick felicities obscure.

When the eyes grow solemn
Laughter fades away
Nature of her mighty childhood
Recollects Titans play

Woodland touched by sunlight
Where the elves abode
Giant meetings, Titans greetings
Fancy of a youthful God

These are coming on thee
In they secret thought
God remembers in thy bosom
All the wonders that HE has wrought.

---------------------------------------

Ah for the riotous day of the first
few days at school!!!

Everything begins in childhood. The Old man
at 80 was once a child...

I love the following story. I have heard different versions of the story, but the one I remember goes something like this:

You give a man a fish; you feed him for a day.
You give a man several fish; you feed him for a week.
You teach a man how to fish and he feeds himself for life.

Here are a couple of leadership/management/communication type books that I have come across and that I think are excellent:

"The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey

"Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men at Work" by Deborah Tannen

When I was in college, I had a business reading class and as part of the curriculum we were assigned to read 6 books for the semester and write a paper on each book. It was one of my favorite classes, as the professor was incredible and the books we read were very thought-provoking. Some of the books I still remember and would totally recommend reading are:

"Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco" by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar
"Den of Thieves" by James Stewart
"For God, Country and Coca-Cola (The Unauthorized History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company That Makes It) by Mark Pendergrast
"Big Blues: The Unmaking of IBM" by Paul Carroll

The General Approach and Method which is the Basis of Modern Management

EMPIRICISM

While not a single school of philosophy, empiricism is an approach
which holds that if a man wants to know what the universe is like
the ONLY correct way to do so is to look for himself.

A generic approach that typifies and which is the basis of
Modern management and other studies in particular in
colleges and universities is this: gather data, organise it
and subject it to analysis with various analytical tools
The most often used analytical tool
is the statistical method.

It is ,in essence the method of science as contrasted
with rationalism which in philosophy implies that thinking
and or reasoning without necessarily referring to
external observations can arrive at scientific truth.

Note

It will emerge that the various subject matters in this thread will
be discrete and not related per se in succeeding post.

It does not matter at this stage.

In time , hopefully a pattern will emerge and a classification
and categorisation can be organised.

Free feel to post on any subject RELATED to Management. This is a creative process
and that in itself can be an exciting exercise.Nothing to lose and
much to gain...

NUMERICAL INDEX

I am going to develop a simple index for the posts of this thread.

I shall start with a numerical
index. The purpose is to facilitate cross referencing. (Later, as the posts
grow and we start catergorisation we can use an alpha -numerical index.
An alpha- numerical index includes an alphabet : Example , A-1)

Post number one will be indexed 1. The next post will be 2. And so forth
for succeding posts.

Each member who posts kindly use this simple numerical index.

Thank you
