I'm really happy Marat is playing in the Davis Cup. He shows his best tennis playing for his country and in my opinion it will be excellent if Marat finishes his tennis career lifting the cup for one more time =)

Davis Cup: Safin arrives expecting 'tough' tie with Israel
By ALLON SINAI

Russia's Davis Cup team arrived in Israel on Sunday afternoon and former world No. 1 Marat Safin admitted that he's expecting this weekend's quarterfinal tie against Israel to be extremely tough.

Russia has reached the semifinals of the competition in each of the last four years, winning the title in 2006, with Israel getting as far as the quarterfinals only twice in its history.

Safin, however, is wary of the threat Israel poses to his team.

"We have a good team, but the only one who did well at Wimbledon is Igor Andreev," said Safin (currently ranked 24th in the world), who lost in the first round at the All England Club.

"It's going to be tough. It's a tough draw, nothing is easy at this stage. Israel has a good doubles team and Sela is playing really well. Sela made a good result at Wimbledon and he will be full of confidence and tough to beat here. So it's not going to be easy for us."

Safin, who said he has been to Israel on holiday three times in the past and that he has many friends in the country, confessed he is pleased that the tie is being played indoors at the Nokia Arena rather than at the Canada Stadium at Ramat Hasharon.

"It's better for both teams to play indoors," Safin said. "It's too tough to play outdoors. Hopefully we won't have a tough time. We're coming here to enjoy ourselves not to suffer."

Safin flew in with Igor Andreev (26) and captain Shamil Tarpischev, with the rest of the team arriving later.

"Israel has a strong team and when you're playing at home you receive a lot of help from the crowd," Andreev said.

"Sela is playing well and Levy is a dangerous player at home. I'm sure the Israeli players will be very motivated to play here, but we will do our best to win."

Thanks Agava
If you go to the following link in MTF there is a link to the Google translation of the page - gives everyonw a rough idea of what was said - also they have copied the pics across.
As this is the site of Israel Tennis it is good to check it each day to see what other pics they have posted.

Ok,that my translation from Hebrew and Russion(if someone know russion I can give my translation from hebrew to russion)

Five days prior to beginning of matches the Russian command arrived to Israel.Marat Safin,at the third time for a career arriving to Israel, shared the impressions:
"I feel good. Already was here in the past and each time enjoyed visits. We will look, as meeting will pass. I hope, we will not have the special problems and difficulties. It the heavy meeting., I hope that we will be able to do it and go out in a semifinal."
«I do not agree with assertion, that for us these matches will be easy. Not in Israel, on their native territory. Matches will be for us very difficult and we hope that will manage to pass this circle. I saw that plays Sella down on Wimbledon.»
Safin about Israel public: «Here a lot of good people. I hope, meeting will pass for us well, we will enjoy, and people will respect us. I think, for both commands well, that we play on the covered court, instead of outside in such weather. Otherwise it would be too heavily to play».
Safin, which reported that played the last year, so marked the care from professional sport: «It is my last year in tennis and I am glad was here.In Israel for me a lot of friends and I going to arrive here in the future, when it will be more spare time for me.»

Thanks, Webby & Agava for links !

Yeah, it will be tough, considering how crowd can get out of control..

I like how Marat is saying that Tennis is a peaceful sport, and they are here to enjoy & let the best one win - I just hope that Marat caries that on court & doesn't get frustrated with the Israeli home crowd..

I believe last time Marat played Sela, he lost in 2 sets..I gotta look it up..

Anyway, good luck to our Russian guys!

A couple of articles ref the upcoming tie.

Tennis / Davis Cup / Safin punctures Israel's bubble

By Uri Talshir, Nir Wolf and Eli Shvidler http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1098626.html

For several days now Israelis have been walking around the vicinity of Yad Eliahu with a strange feeling of euphoria: The "Nokia Arena" looks like a true sports complex, the Russian team landed without its best players, Dudi Sela returned from Wimbledon with the knowledge that he is capable of earning two victories for Israel on his own, Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich have always been a sure point. And, hey, we beat Sweden.

Advancing to the Davis Cup semis has never looked so realistic. Israel has never been so close to being one of the four best tennis teams in the world.

Russia's Marat Safin, however, brought everybody back to earth during yesterday's press conference ahead of this weekend's tie. "With all due respect to Israel's victory over Sweden, the Swedes were playing without (Robin) Soderling, while (Thomas) Johansson [barely showed up]," he declared. "So everyone knows how you advanced to the quarterfinal. I have no problem with it. It's a matter of luck. You could have drawn Spain or a squad with two players in the top 100, and then the whole story would have been different. You're only in the quarterfinal thanks to a good draw."

No doubt Safin, who plans to retire after this year, knows a thing or two about psychological warfare. Moreover, on the court he has proven during the last two days of practice that he is in excellent condition, despite the word in the local press about being out of shape and the fact that he dropped to number 60 in the world this week.

"Playing that kind of tennis, he plans to retire at age 30? Then what?" wondered a member of the Russian delegation.

Shamil Tarpischev, the Russian team captain, is expected to insert Safin - a former world number one - not only in the doubles but also on Sunday in the singles. Igor Kunitsyn will replace Dmitry Tursunov, who withdrew yesterday, and could also end up playing doubles. Kunitsyn, ranked 35 in the world, has only played one Davis Cup match previously. In last year's semifinal against Argentina, he partnered Tursunov in the doubles and came back from two sets down against Guillermo Canas and David Nalbandian to keep Russia alive in the tie. They eventually lost 3-2 to the hosts.

Kunitsyn will join Safin, Igor Andreev and Mikhail Youzhny for the tie.

Because Sela could beat any of the Russians on any given day and a victory by Harel Levy would be a bonus no one can count on, it's clear to the Israeli squad that if it wants to make history it will have to eke out a point from its doubles team of Ram and Erlich - despite their having gone separate ways this year. "It's hard getting used to the court in Nokia, but I think it will be good and we'll earn the point we need," said Ram yesterday. "It's fun to practice with Yoni - the chemistry came back very quickly."

However, as much as they try to hide it, the chemistry will never quite return to what it once was. The big blowup, the publicized breakup and the experience of making a comeback for the dear flag were visible from a distance during the duo's practice yesterday. They opened the day in the stadium, hit around a bit with coach Noam Bar, and held a scrimmage with Noam Okun and Amir Hadad. There was talk and laughter, but mostly it happened with others and not with each other.

To cooperate in such an important tie when you don't get along with the guy next to you will be a difficult, yet fascinating mission. "It will be a close match against any duo that plays us," said Erlich. "Kunitsyn is the most experienced among them in doubles. Safin and Youzhny are powerful doubles players. We expect an attractive match, and I hope we'll manage to replicate on Saturday what we have done until now."

Russia's Safin claims Israel is "lucky" to be in Davis Cup quarters By ALLON SINAI

Marat Safin claimed on Tuesday that Israel's Davis Cup team was "lucky" to make it into the quarterfinals of the competition.

Israel defeated Sweden 3-2 on the road in the World Group first round four months ago, and the former world number 1, who will be playing for Russia at the Nokia Arena this weekend, believes Eyal Ran's men only advanced to the last eight because they were facing an under-strength Sweden team.

"With all due respect, Israel was lucky to get to the quarterfinals," Safin said on Tuesday. "Sweden practically had no players. Thomas Johansson was semi-retired and Andreas Vinciguerra hadn't played professionally for five years."

Safin dropped 36 places to number 60 in the world on Monday, but the 29-year-old, who will retire at the end of the season, is optimistic he will be in top form for the tie against Israel, which gets underway with two singles matches on Friday.

"It doesn't really matter that I haven't done very well recently," Safin said. "I'm ready for the tie and I'm feeling confident."

Safin doesn't believe he will be troubled by the rowdy local support. "I don't think it's going to get any worse than Chile or Argentina," he said. "We just want to try and have fun and whoever is better will win."

Israel's number 2 singles player in the tie Harel Levy feels Safin's remarks regarding Israel's route to the quarterfinals might play into the national team's hands. "Anyone can say what they like. He's obviously very confident and maybe that will mean he will be loose on court," Levy said.

Captain Eyal Ran was quick to defend Israel's achievement. "I'm very proud of our victory against Sweden," Ran said. "Russia is a very good team and I think they are under a lot of pressure because they are the favorites."
